Title: AI Agents in Formal Education: Scientific Evidence and Guardrails for Children’s Rights

Abstract: Despite the increasing number of guidelines and frameworks for AI in formal education, recent developments on AI agents and companions that aim to autonomously guide children’s learning have created the urgency for scientific evidence about their impact on children and for suitable guardrails for children’s well-being. My presentation will first summarize recent scientific evidence from two experimental studies with embodied (social robots) and non-embodied (Socratic and explanatory) AI with students in Belgium and Spain. Then, it will reflect on emerging opportunities and risks of current Generative AI technology and propose future directions.
